With the November presidential elections nearing, the current roller-coaster election season comes at a time when the country is at a level of political division that is both narrow and deep. Indeed, there is reason to believe that a concentration of presidential powers is helping drive Americans into polarized camps. Presidents are becoming more powerful on behalf of their political parties, and as a result may be less capable of governing on behalf of all Americans.

This insightful discussion will put the current election into the context of Miller Center's efforts to address this bigger challenge. It will discuss how the presidency might work better with Congress; how the President and Executive Branch might better use the powers it does have; how we might reform the presidential selection process; how we might hold presidents accountable; and how we might better equip presidents to unify the country.
