Joe DeLisle served as a panelist for the session “International Corporate Transactions: M&A Transactions Involving Closely-Held Family Businesses – Navigating Familial Waters” at the 2019 Spring Semi-Annual World Law Group Conference in Cape Town, South Africa on May 17, 2019. Mr. DeLisle and the other panelists, including Tomaso Cenci (Gianni, Origoni, Grippo, Cappelli & Partners), Vinay Vaish (Vaish Associates) and Cheván Daniels (ENS Africa) and Moderators Victor Xercavins (Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira) and Scott Guan (Zhong Lun), discussed the following:   

Life cycles of family businesses

  • The personal and non-legal issues that come with buying and selling family-owned businesses
  • Ownership issues such as trusts and estate planning vehicles and the comparisons between common law and civil law jurisdictions
  • Accounting and valuation issues related to assets and expenses that may not be core to the family-owned business
