When speaking with employers about DEI, the majority of responses fall within one of two main categories. One is a blank stare along with comments such as, “I have no idea where I would even begin to implement a DEI program in our workforce. Based on the samples I have seen online and the stories shared by others, I am concerned it would do more harm than good. I don’t think we are ready for something like that. We are just a small company. I thought DEI was something for Fortune 500 companies like Target or Disney.” The second set of comments are those such as, “We have done everything our DEI consultant has told us to do, but I cannot tell that it has made much of a difference. Some employees have bought into the DEI concepts, but many still have not. I’m not sure where we go from here.”
This session is designed to address both categories of impressions of DEI, by helping you go beyond trying to implement a “DEI program” to instead encouraging a culture of mutual respect in your workforce. Our guest speaker, Tangela Johnson, has been guiding employers of all sizes and several different industries in developing such a culture by focusing on the similarities and shared experiences of those in the workplace rather than highlighting differences and potential points of conflict. She will take us through a mutual respect encouragement session, so you can experience first-hand how it works.
