Silica Standard (Part 2): The Exposure Assessment
Miller & Martin PLLC Blog | November 13, 2018
In order to obtain objective data for compliance with the Standard, general industry must make an exposure assessment. The exposure assessment can be done using a performance monitoring option or a scheduled monitoring option. The performance monitor specifically relates to employees’ exposure to respiratory crystalline silica during their employment. The scheduled monitoring option requires an initial monitoring of exposures as well as follow-up monitoring to confirm exposure limits.
For construction activities that are not specifically addressed in of Table 1 (Table 1 will be the subject of tomorrow’s post) or as an alternative to Table 1 the construction industry may use alternative exposure control methods to insure that no employee is exposed to more than 50 micro grams per cubic meter of respirable crystalline silica calculated on an 8 hour time weighted average.
