In Memoriam: Howard I. Levine (1938-2022)

It is with deep sadness we report that former Miller & Martin partner and friend, Howard I. Levine, 84, passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2022.

He joined Miller & Martin in 1964, where he practiced in the corporate department and served as Chairman of the firm from September 2002 until November 2009. Howard focused his practice on healthcare, life insurance, trusts and estates and corporate law. He served as lead counsel for a regionally recognized hospital and served as counsel to the hospital’s board of directors, executive committee and credentials committee. He also served as lead counsel for, and a member of the board of directors of, several companies. He also proudly served in the United States Army Reserves as First Lieutenant in Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

Since 1991, Howard was consistently recognized in The Best Lawyers in America©. His professional memberships included the American Bar Association, Association of Life Insurance Counsel, Chattanooga Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association and Tennessee Bar Association Health Law Section (past chairman). A servant leader, Howard previously served as President or Chairman of the following organizations: Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce, Chattanooga Chamber Foundation, Mizpah Congregation, Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Team Evaluation Center, Tennessee Bar Association Health Law Section and Yale Club of Chattanooga. He also volunteered as a board member for Association of Yale Alumni, The Bright School, Chambliss Center for Children, Chattanooga Police Foundation, The McCallie School, Mountain City Club and UTC Chancellor’s Roundtable.

Howard held a law degree from the University of Virginia and a bachelor's degree from Yale University.
