In Memoriam: Stephen E. Kabakoff (1973-2026)

We mourn the untimely and unexpected loss of our partner and friend, Stephen Kabakoff, who passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Stephen exemplified kindness, patience, and intelligence, and was distinguished by his dedication to family, community, and the legal profession.

Stephen started his career as a U.S. patent examiner at the height of the dot-com era. He spent several years as a registered patent agent, where he prepared and prosecuted patents for both large Fortune 100 companies and smaller start-ups/entrepreneurs. He was a partner at a large international IP law firm for more than a decade before joining Miller & Martin in March 2020.

In addition to his practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Stephen was a seasoned litigator having litigated in federal district courts and before the International Trade Commission (ITC) and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the USPTO. He has also been recognized by IAM Patent 1000, The Legal 500 U.S. and The Legal 500 Atlanta Elite as one of the leading lawyers in intellectual property law, patent licensing, and transactional work. He served as a Board of Director for Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (GIPA) and past Chair of Licensing Executives Society (LES) Atlanta Chapter.  He was a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Atlanta Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Stephen attended Suffolk University Law School and received a graduate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and an undergraduate degree in Materials Science & Engineering from Cornell University.

Stephen’s warmth, kindness, and intelligent wit will be deeply missed by his friends and colleagues at Miller & Martin and in the legal community.
